Wicked – A New Musical Songbook
Authoring/Arrangement: Hal Leonard. This Piano/Vocal Selections book features melodies integrated into the piano part, offering authentic arrangements for performers, students, and fans. Best for intermediate players who want true Broadway flavor with singer-friendly lines. The 122 pages cover 13 Broadway hits from Wicked, making it ideal for performances or classroom study. A limitation is the focus on piano and vocal parts, which may not suit players seeking heavy orchestration.
The Best Broadway Songs Ever – 6th Edition
Authoring/Arrangement: Hal Leonard. This comprehensive P/V/G book is best for versatile performers who want a broad catalog of essential Broadway classics. With 416 pages, it covers a wide range of tempos and vocal ranges, making it a solid choice for recitals, auditions, or classroom use. Better for those who need a single, all-purpose collection; it is less focused on a single show but may be bulkier to carry.
Broadway Sheet Music Collection 2010-2017
Authoring/Arrangement: Hal Leonard. A compact collection of 39 contemporary musical hits from Hamilton, Aladdin, Dear Evan Hansen, and more. It’s ideal for performers who want modern Broadway selections in a single volume and who appreciate the piano/vocal/guitar layout. The book suits intermediate to advanced players and may be preferred by those seeking current show tunes rather than classic standards.
100 of the Most Beautiful Piano Solos Ever
Authoring/Arrangement: Hal Leonard. This extensive solo piano collection includes diverse genres, with a focus on beautiful melodies from classical, pop, jazz, film, and Broadway. Best for solo pianists seeking repertoire that blends technique with expressive line work. A caution: the breadth means some arrangements may be more challenging for beginners.
Les Misérables Vocal/Piano Selections
Authoring/Arrangement: Hal Leonard. This book provides authentic piano/vocal arrangements from the Les Misérables score. It is best for performers preparing for auditions, rehearsals, or live performances who need reliable, singer-friendly notation. The 86 pages focus on essential pieces, but some popular songs may be arranged with limited orchestration.
Buying Guide: Key Purchase Considerations
- What is your primary purpose? Practice, auditions, or performances? Choose a book that emphasizes your goal, such as a broad catalog for auditions or a dedicated show for focused study.
- Which instrumentation do you need? If you play piano only, select P/V; if you want guitar or a broader ensemble approach, pick P/V/G.
- How experienced are you? Beginners may benefit from easier arrangements, while intermediate to advanced players may prefer collections with a wider range of keys and rhythms.
- Do you want a single all-purpose collection or a show-specific book? For long-term study, a diverse collection can be advantageous; for niche shows, a show-focused book may be best.
- How portable should your library be? Large volumes are rich but less portable; consider page count and handling when traveling to lessons or rehearsals.
